Solve the system using elimination. x − 4y = 4 3x − 4y = −12

Common in both: -4y
Subtract the second from the first.
x-4y=4
3x-4y=-12
-2x=16
x=-8
Substitute in to find y.
-8-4y=4
-4y=12
y=-3
