The fractions 1/2 and 1/8 are not equivalent fractions. 

1/2=4/8

1/8<4/8

1/2 and 1/8 are not equivalent, meaning they are not valued as the same.

1/2 is larger than 1/8 because 1/2 is pretty much half of 1 whole, while 1/8 is smaller than half of 1 whole.
