The Hittite Empire was able to survive even attacks by rivals because their weapons - their metallurgy was so advanced (especially for that time period, around the 15th century BC), that they could easily make iron weapons which other nations couldn't at the time. This gave them an advantage over their enemies and so they could defend their empire.
