Because there are many words that are extremely important, but have a close spelling such as Peritoneum (which is the lining of the abdominal cavity), and Perineum (Which is something I'm not gonna get into).

Additionally proper spelling tends to be something insurance and companies, and billers will use, to short healthcare providers.
