How did General William T. Sherman help bring the war to an end?

He had a policy of total war in which he destroyed any piece of infrastructure he could get to. He destroyed buildings and roads both private and public which caused a lot of economic issues for the South but it was effective so they kept doing it. This was during his famous march to the sea.
