cross multiply
(3)(n) = (4)(12)
3n = 48
n = 48/3
n = 16 <===

and just so u know, proportions are nothing but equivalent fractions..
16/12 = 4/3....reduce
4/3 = 4/3 (correct)....equivalent fractions
