Say you have a bond A-B.

Even though in this bond each atom shares electrons, one might attract electrons more than another. If one atom, A for instance, attracts those electrons way better than B, then the bond will be polar, and the electronic cloud will be more important around A than around B, which gives chemical properties to the molecule.
