Early encounters with Europeans were often recorded in African art. Look closely at the top of the mask above (and the detail below). Do you see faces? These represent Portuguese explorers with beards and hats (flanked by mudfish) who visited the Benin Kingdom along the west coast of Africa in the late 1400s. These explorers began to collect ivory which they referred to as “white gold.”
