In the nuclear chain reaction of uranium-235, what particle reacts with the uranium nucleus to make it unstable?

The neutron. As a neutron breaks apart the nucleus of a uranium atom, it causes a chain reaction releasing more neutrons. When we control this reaction we can harness the energy and produce nuclear power. When the reaction is left unchecked you get a immensely powerful release of energy, an atomic bomb.
