1 ton=2,000 pounds. so 40,000 divided by 2,000 equals 20. That means that 20 tons are in 40,000 pounds. :)

1 ton = 2000 lbs

[tex]\frac{1}{2000} = \frac{x}{40000}[/tex]
[tex]x = \frac{40000}{2000} = \boxed{20}[/tex]
