The equation is:

3/4 + 3/4 - 1-8

1: Find common denominator

3/4 -> 6/8, so

6/8 + 6/8 - 1/8

12/8 - 1/8

11/8

He walked 11/8 Miles, or 1 3/8 miles, in total.
