The amoeba belongs to the protozoa kingdom. Therefore, an amoeba is a protozoan.

Fun Fact: A bit of research tells me that protozoan is derived from protos and zoon which  means "first" and "animal" respectively. This relates to the fact that protozoans are unicellulars (so they're the most basic beings in the animal kingdom).
