Vesuvius
At the time of the destruction of the city, an estimated 15,000 people lived in Pompeii. As many as 2,000 died in the ash and toxic gases of Vesuvius' eruption in 79 C.E. The city today is an open-air museum dedicated to the experience of walking through an ancient Roman town.
