While California has earthquakes, they are much more prepared for them than most states that also experience earthquakes. An example of a horrendous disaster in South Dakota is a combination of snowfall and dangerously low temperatures created the perfect condition for the School House Blizzard back in 1888. Temperatures of -20 degrees Fahrenheit plus brutal winds hit the state hard, and 235 were lost because of it.
