The answer is: it protected them from additional fees and exportation of their goods.

The protective tariff that initiated by hamilton, increase the price of the foreign products when they enter the local market by imposing an import tariff while eliminating the payment that local businesses had to pay when they want to export their products to other country. This would benefit all the producers that resided in united states.
