You first want to get rid of 2, so you divide two on both sides canceling the two on the left and getting x-1=5. then you add 1 to both sides getting x=6. Hope this helps!

1) Distribute the 2 to x and -1. You get: 2x - 2 = 10

2) Add 2 to both sides of the equation. You get:
2x = 12

3 Divide both sides by 2.
You get: x = 6
