Well, during this time to USA was split between two working class areas the north and south, the south was heavily reliant on farming and tabbaco and cotton sales and they needed slaves to do so.

Explanation:

It's one of the reasons the civil war took place, the north was for slave emancipation and the south needed slaves to do work that they could have done themselves (THIS IS MY OPINION BASED ON RESEARCH YOU SHOULD LOOK IT UP YOURSELF)
