Why does Odysseus lie about his ship and how does this characterize him

Odysseus lies and tells Polyphemus that his boat was shipwrecked off the coast of his island. Odysseus does this because he knows that if Polyphemus knows the boat is just sitting there then Polyphemus will destroy his boat.
