The test helps to determine whether a law violates the establishment clause, which is in order to avoid any governmental support of religion

The lemon test is used to see if a law is in compliance with the Establishment Clause which states, "The First Amendment provides that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion….”

The lemon test, which was created by 
Lemon v. Kurtzman, can tell if a law infringes on the Establishment Clause.
