she went from being serious to open minded . the fantasy expanded her mindset and led her to actually enjoy her childhood

She didn't have the approval of his parents because she didn't have a feminin appearance with her short hair and athletic ability and she was a bit sad about that. However, with the elements o fantasy she became happier.
