Henry VIII. He wanted to divorce his first wife because she didn't have a son.

The pope didn't approve of this one bit. Henry said 'screw it' and separated from the Catholic Church, and became 'Anglican'. He then went on to have SIX wives! (five died :/)

Interestingly enough, that meant that ONE man controlled both the church and state! The government already wasn't secular to begin with, but this can prove dangerous...

However, out of that became one of the most important matriarchs in European History: Elizabeth I.
