How does silica affect the characteristics of magma?

if there is more silica, then the magma becomes more viscous, and if the magma is more viscous, then the volcanic explosions tend to be much much larger. lower silica counts allow the magma to flow much farther, as they wouldnt be as viscous: examples of this would be the volcano in hawaii, as this is a shield volcano.
