Why is soil so important? why do land animals, even meat eaters, depend on soil to survive?

Everything relies on each other. If you were to take out soil, a large percentage of vegetation would not be able to grow. Herbivores would have to compete for food and many would not survive, and then the Carnivores would not have food either.
