what does it mean if someone says that an object in a story is "symbolic"

A symbol can be many things including people, animals, and yes, objects. A symbol basically is anything that stands for, or represents, something else. So when an object is symbolic in a story, it usually means the author is telling you there is another meaning to that specific object. I hope this helps!
