The answer is hydrolysis. Glycogen is a polymer of glucose linked together by α(1→4) glycosidic bonds and α(1→6)-linked branches. During hydrolysis, a water molecule is consumed for every bond that is hydrolyzed. Attached diagram is a clear description of this process. In biology, the degradation of glycogen to glucose is referred to as  glycogenolysis.
