Mercantilism believed that colonies should only serve as export destination of finished products from the colonial master while they themselves exported raw materials only to the colonial masters.  A perfect illustration is that the role of colonies was to produce raw materials and export them to the colonial master, while importing finished goods from the same raw materials.
