Western Europe was able to recover from World War II with the help from the United States. Whereas after World War I the United States turned its back on Europe, after World War II the United States felt committed to help its wartime allies. The United States instituted the Marshall Plan which helped repair war-torn Europe. They also created the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) with Western European nations which further invested the U.S. in European affairs.
