An imperialist policy is usually (mostly historically) ruled by an emperor. This kind of policy extends the country's power using diplomatic relations with other countries, or using Military force to conquer and extend its land.
One example of Imperialism is the European countries when they started to explore the new world, searching new routes for trades, enslaving, etc..

Hope this Helps! :)
